It's a tumor... [Apr. 15th, 2009|03:29 pm]

Sorry, didn't mean to cause a panic. Referring to a great bit that Penn and Teller had in How to Play with your Food, a near and dear to my heart book, if only because I have worked the God of Carbonation bit to DEATH and it rocks. And also because I have done the substituting a made-up fortune, specifically "So sorry for bad news but is tumor" for the one that had been in the fortune cookie in the first place. And yes, as suggested, I did throw it down on the table and run to the bathroom, clutching a napkin over my lower face and sobbing.

And my friends DID want to kill me afterwards, fake tumor or not and it shook them so badly that I will never, ever do that to anyone again. But it was funny as hell. I'm grinning and giggling right now just thinking about it and am sorely tempted to repeat it...

But anyway. I don't hold a lot of stock in fortunes, astrology, runes, card reading, palm reading...I don't. (Although those of you who don't know me THAT well, can read the description of "Leo" and pretty much I don't really like the color yellow and I do like to be alone but otherwise, it's alarmingly accurate.) But really, I'm not a believer in anything but coincidences.

So fortune cookies I really don't put any stock in. Although it's really been a couple of tough, frustrating couple of weeks at work, so I was heartened by last night's fortune of "Your hard work will pay off". And bolstered even more by my breakfast fortune cookie that told me "Work hard and you will become more wealthy". Yay! But really, I didn't believe them.

But the third one, "Happiness always accompanies with you". That one, on the other hand, I can believe. Of course, that could mostly be because a fortune cookie is always more believable when you suspect that English is not its native language, isn't it?

I've just finished a pretty decent science fiction/fantasy series, in which one minor but lovely detail was the fortune cookies from a certain take-out place that were written by seers: they always came true. And if you put off looking at them, they got stronger, and worse....
