Oh, Virginia.... [Apr. 29th, 2008|10:01 am]
terribleturnip
Look, already I'm struggling to stay on good terms with you. So many wonderful people live there. But really, the trip up and down 95 is KILLING me. KILLING me. Either make more lanes, create some alternate routes, or stop over-developing. Pick one, I don't care, but do SOMETHING. Five years ago, the trip to F-burg took way less time. And Sundays you could actually get home at about the same rate it took to drive south. 90 miles of stop and go traffic just because of volume is unacceptable.

But the guns. Again with the guns. I can't use a freaking radar detector, but I can buy a gun without a background check at a gun show.

Look, I know, speed kills. So do guns. And tobacco. So do assloads of pig farms spilling into the Bay. The only difference that I can see is that speeders don't have a lobbying group.

And it would be bad enough if you were just going to continue to ignore the gun thing. But no, you're going to spend Idon'tknowhowmanytaxdollars, but I'm guessing it's more than a coupla hundred bucks, to study the private gun sales, but BEFORE you even have any data, you're already planning to do nothing about it.

Look, I feel the same way about spiderwebs and dust bunnies...er, dust mastadons. I wish they wouldn't happen and honestly, right now I have no plans to do anything about them. So I continue to IGNORE them. Pretend I don't SEE them. I don't study them, say "yep, that's pretty ferocious" and then walk away...once you see it, my friends, you gotta deal with it.

It shouldn't be effortless to posess something that can so easily snuff lives in a fit of rage or carelessness.

Deal with it.

(As we Marylanders here secretly hope that no one will remember that once you could buy plague and other bio-beauties mail-order in our fine state...because I'm all about the equal opportunity snarking)

Pardon the interruption...

I wandered over here from MistressFetch's place. Gots to put in my two cents' worth on the Virginia + Guns thing. [Edit: Actually, this rant is long enough that I'm going to post on MY LJ]

There's no difference between "at a gun show" and "not at a gun show". Go to a dealer at a gun show, do the background check thing. That's 99.9(probably another 9 or 2) percent of all the gun sales. Just like seeing the same dealer at his shop.

Run into a private seller (1 or 2 guys walking around carrying guns with 4 sale signs stuck in the muzzles), and it's the same as buying at a flea market, yard sale, or from a newspaper ad or Craigslist. He CAN'T do a background check, because he doesn't have access to the database. Only dealers do. (Rest at my LJ)

I know it's not exactly civilization travel but well. Civilization is causing the issue.

Actually, you can ignore the 29/15 Bus through Culpeper part. Stay on 29 bypass until you get to 522 east of town. Exit off 29, left on 522, right off Germanna to stay on 522, and go for it.

There's a shortcut this side of Mineral, that cuts across the west end of Lake Anna. I wouldn't take that the first few times, until you can map it. If I remember, the shortcut is 612. Originally called Monrovia Rd where it hits 522, Then doglegs about 150 yards on Belmont Rd, and finally continues on Stubbs Bridge Rd. Cross Stubbs Bridge over the west end of Lake Anna, and go up the west side of the park. At a humongous Stop sign, hook a right onto Lawyers Rd. Where Lawyers Rd tees into Courthouse / 208, take a right. The winery is immediately on your left.

Been the alternate routes -- takes longer. Even with bad traffic.
