Credit where credit's due... [Dec. 17th, 2008|10:30 am]
Interesting tidbit in a newsletter, talking about brand extensions gone wrong.

(Brand extension being when someone in one business, say Coke, decides to make Coke brand clothing and sell it in another venue, like Wal-Mart. Which wouldn't be a bad idea, if it weren't for the clothing being promoted as being "green" because it's made from recycled soda bottles. Which a lot of clothes are, so big deal. And the clothing is made in China, so let's calculate the carbon impact of shipping the bottles to China so they can be recycled where there are little to no environmental regs concerning pollution from the recycling, fiber and clothes making process. And then shipping the clothes back here...yeah, that's treading lightly on the earth all right...)

But let me get off my green-washing soapbox and get on with the funny.

Burger King as come out with a new line of branded underwear. Which is more whatever than funny, except here's a marketing exec take on it:

"Marketers are so in love with their brands that they think consumers are as well and will go to the lengths of wearing their brand name on their underwear," said Laura Ries, cofounder of Ries & Ries. "While people love the Whopper, they don't want to parade around in underwear that says, 'This is where my big, fat ass came from.'"

But even though I'm laughing...I'm thinking, oh, I dunno...let's give credit where credit's due. Although I'm not sure if Lay's Potato Chips makes underwear...I may have to make my own.

Oooh, ooh, remember the Days of the Week underwear? Oh, c'mon, didn't everyone get a set of those from some Auntie? Instead I'd have to have a pair with a big ol' Ribeye steak imprinted on the back, then a cupcake, a six pack of cider, a bottle of wine, a quesadilla with sour cream....I guess I would need a month's worth...
