Point of Order [Oct. 5th, 2006|09:45 am]
Okay, it's stupid of me to tread into the mire of current events...and I'm sure I'll regret it...but hey, what's a day when you haven't done something you regret?

I'm uncomfortable with the way the word pedophile is being applied to Foley.

Since I don't read the news very closely, maybe I've missed the part where he's got child porn stashed away or has molested children in earlier times.

But this kid (and the rest of the pages who are stepping forward) is what, 16?

That's really not a child. That's a minor. I mean, is it totally inappropriate to find a 16 year old sexually attractive? (If so, does that make me a pedophile? Or am I saved from that title just because I have the moral fiber to keep my thoughts to myself and not act on them?)

Hell, there are states where you can marry someone that age if you've got the parents' permission. Although, personally I don't think a 16 year old should be making a decision like that -- and that's why, no matter how delectable he/she is, hands off, suggestive e-mails off, etc., is the only way to go.

What he did was totally inappropriate -- both from a messing with the head of a minor and from an abuse of power, messing with underlings standpoint.

But pedophile? A pedophile wants to have sex with children -- NOT teenagers. A pedophile is actually turned on by 8 year olds, 4 year olds, 12 year olds....sorry, pause while I shake off the repulsion.

Sure, where do you draw the line...12 is heinous, 14 isn't right...18 is okay, 16 is.....?

But really, in terms of criminal acts, I hate to see inappropriate behavior with a 16 year old lumped in with having sex with an 8 year old...I'm sorry, neither one should happen, but there's a big f***ing difference between the two.

Wikipedia says...

The word comes from the Greek paidophilia (παιδοφιλία)—pais (παις, "child") and philia (φιλία, "love, friendship"). Paidophilia was coined by Greek poets as a substitute for "paiderastia" (pederasty).[2]

The term paedophilia erotica was coined in 1886 by the Vienna psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing in his writing Psychopathia Sexualis.[3] He gave the following characteristics:

the sexual interest is toward children, either prepubescent or at the beginning of puberty
the sexual interest is the primary one, that is, exclusively or mainly toward children
the sexual interest remains over time

However, puberty does begin at different ages on different people...

I thought of every smart*ss comment I could think of and then went, "Oh, she's serious" :-) In actuality my Grandfather married my Grandmother when he was 26 and she was 14. So after reading your post, I'm thinking that would classify him as a pedophile...Wow, Mer, you have a point!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I'm being serious..btw)

Now, while what he was doing was WRONG, I guess it wouldn't be technically referred to as pedophilia....hmmmmm 16 is the age of consent, right?

Now, sit down before you read this...

I agree with you.

These days, a 16-year-old (hell, a 13-year-old!) knows what sex is, and at least in a very superficial way, "knows" what he or she is getting into. For an 8-year-old? Sex = enormous trauma.

Whomever is using "pedophile" is trying to create as much damage for Mr. Foley as possible. And that, my friend, is what politics is all about.
