Step away from the worry, and no one will get hurt... [Jun. 20th, 2008|08:06 am]
I realized, driving home last night, that it's been over a month since I've been to the library and I currently have NO library books checked out.

Wow. There's a testament to how overbusy I've been. The past several years, I've averaged about 2-4 books a week. Sometimes more, rarely less. And lest you think I've suddenly become a total literary slacker, I got a plethora of books for Christmas and at some point in the throes of pre-Virginia Faire preparation, I ran out of library books and started in on the Christmas books, of which I had about a dozen. I've also been making a concerted effort to catch up on the dozens of back issues of National Geo, Smithsonian and Mental Floss, as the bathroom magazine basket overfloweth.

And it's almost all non-fiction, which is slower going. Made slower by my reading three different ones at a time -- because one has been packed in the "going to faire" luggage, another in the bedroom, another downstairs and frankly, I grew weary of pursuing the damn book. So, I'm reading And a Bottle of Rum while on travel, Blue Latitudes downstairs and Scents of Eden (about the spice trade) in the bedroom.

But still, I feel this burning need to go the library and check out some books -- since I used to check out 8-10 every two weeks, and now suddenly nothing, I'm very concerned that this reduction of use will result in budget cuts, job losses. Even if I don't read them, I feel as if I should be doing my part as a taxpayer and utilizing the resources -- 'cause if they don't get used...bye-bye...

So there I am, driving home, trying to figure out the next possible crumb of time in my schedule when I could possibly stop by and drive book usage up a little bit at the local library.

Sometimes I am too tightly wrapped even for me.

I love this book. Of course, being of European stock, I have to.
